The nuisance of ice on windows , rotor blades and wings could soon be a thing of the past. Researchers at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur have discovered how to prevent water from freezing on a surface. MartinaHirayama and her Team were able to show that drops of water on synthetic material turn in to ice only a temperature below freezing point. The synthetic material imitates the effect of proteins.Arctic fish, for example, are armed with alumin, a protein that lowers the freezing point of their blood by binding with nascent ice crystals, preventing them from growing unchecked.

"We can already simulate these properties in the lab , but we still have to test the process in a wind tunnel," says Hirayama. The coating will then also be tested on the rotor blades of wind energy plants.
