Crisis? What crisis? The party is on in Mykonos
Tuesday, June 30, 2015 - 01:12
Crowded with tourists, the Greek island of Mykonos chills amid fears the party atmosphere may not last. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Nevermind the crisis -- the party is on in Mykonos, as Athens grapples with a debt crisis. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ISRAELI TOURIST, HANOCH, SAYING: "Unbelievable, it's very nice, the weather, the music, everything is the best." On the famous "Super Paradise Beach," tourists are taking the crisis lying down. Or they are simply enjoying what the Greek Islands have to offer. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AMERICAN TOURIST, MICHELLE DANIELSON, SAYING: "Yeah, I feel like there is no crisis here at all." And while Greeks may be lining up at ATM's or worry about using credit cards -- no such problems for shoppers in Mykonos so far. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MYKONOS SOUVENIR SHOP OWNER, CONSTANTINA POLITOU, SAYING: "They (the tourists) can pay with credit card. The ATM is full. They can take money. We don't have problem, or with the credit card. The ATM or the tourists, we don't have problem...for now. I don't know after ten days or a month, but for now it's ok." That optimism could be tilting at windmills if the country's economy remains in limbo.
